How to add grass to your design using the VI Library
Step 1: Open your photograph JPG file in the Photo Paint 12 program.
NOTE: Our original image is show in Caption 1
Step 2: Open the VI Library and choose the Grasses catelog. On the 5th page of Grasses we drug Grass3 onto
our design. Then we resized and stretched the chunk of grass until it covered the entire area where we needed
grass to appear. If the grass covers more than the desired boundaries we will erase the unwanted areas later. You can
stretch the objects by using the pick tool and clicking and dragging the small boxes on the sides and corners of
the object. Dragging from the corners expands/shrinks proportionally while the tops and sides just stretch.
NOTE: See Caption 2
Step 3: Once your grass is positioned and sized appropriately we need to make the grass invisible so we can see
where to draw our mask outline. To make the grass temporarily invisible we can click on the eye next to this
object in our object docker. See the arrow in caption 3.
NOTE: If your object docker is not open click on Window > Dockers >
Objects.
Step 4: We can't draw a mask on an invisible object layer because it is locked. So we need to select the Background
again by clicking on the background layer/object in the object docker. It will be highlighted in blue in the
list now. Next, we need to draw the outline for the area that needs filled with grass. Click on the mask tool
on the left tool bar and then click on the freehand mask tool in the mask tool bar. The K key also selects this
tool.
NOTE: See caption 4
Step 5: Our next step is to use the freehand mask to outline ONLY the area we want the grass to appear. See caption 4
for reference. We started by clicking once where the circled red dot is. Then we left-clicked once where the rest of the red
circles are in a clockwise order around the front yard, then finally double-clicked on the original spot to complete the
selection. At this point there should be a dashed black and white line around the area, as is show in caption 4.
Step 6: With the mask still selected click on the eye for the grass object layer in the object docker to make the
grass visible again and click on the Inverts a Mask button. This button is pointed out in Caption 5. Inverting the mask
will select everything outside the area you masked, including the grassy area we dont want to keep. Then simply hit
the Delete key on the keyboard and this will erase the grass down to just the area we had selected/masked.
Step 7: Your image should display the mask ask well as the blue and white line showing you have the grass object
selected in the object docker. Now click the Clears a Mask button at the top, next to Inverts a Mask.
(it's a red circle with a line through it). See Caption 6
